2020 Pur Jus
One of the chief joys of winemaking is the opportunity for collaboration… and not just with other winemakers but the multitude of passionate, like-minded visionaries you find at every step along the chain from vineyard to dining table. Pur Jus is one such project, bringing together the creative sensibilities of our French distributors – Cave Pur Jus – our friends at Leigh Street Wine Room in Adelaide, and the incredible artistry of Russ Pope. Pur Jus (pure juice) comes from perhaps the coolest (in every sense of the word) and most interesting small blocks in the Adelaide Hills.
Originally planted to Cabernet Franc, the block is in a misty hollow and struggles to ripen, so much so that as a Cab Franc block it only really yielded a crop every three or four years. Now grafted grafted entirely to Pinot Noir, the fruit ripens slowly but beautifully. And as an added bonus, about 10% of the grafts didn’t take so there remains a charming, lingering shadow of Cab Franc in each vintage. You could almost argue that the wine is Pur Loire – a light, fresh, expressive, Loire-like take on Pinot Noir with flinty edges, lifted red-cherry highlights and a soft tannic structure.
Made in very limited quantities for direct sale, or available when next you’re on Leigh Street or traveling France.
100% whole bunch, 90% Pinot Noir, 10% Cabernet Franc, three weeks on skins, matured in a single French puncheon.
